UR Medicine Running Clinic

Your Team

From physical to mental to overall wellness, our team is committed to getting you back on your feet. Our team members are runners and athletes too, and know what it’s like to experience injury and go through the recovery process.

Our physicians are board-certified, and have subspecialties in sports medicine, orthopaedic surgery, pediatric care and pediatric surgery. Their research into musculoskeletal issues, stress fractures, fatigue, body mass index (BMI) and eating disorders has been published in several nationally recognized, peer-reviewed, scientific medical journals. They use that knowledge to ensure patients get the best evidence-based, customized care.

Our athletic trainers and physical therapists have advanced certifications in Active Release Technique® and Functional Movement Screening. Our physical therapists are also recognized by the American Physical Therapy Association as sports and orthopaedic specialists.

Rizzone

Katherine H. Rizzone, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics, is a board-certified sports medicine physician who specializes in running medicine. Dr. Rizzone has additional certifications in dry needling to treat common running injuries, such as tendonitis and muscle strains and tears, as well as clinical densitometry to assess bone density in athletes with stress fractures.

Dr. Rizzone is an avid athlete herself; she was on the Division I crew/rowing team at the University of Buffalo, and is now the mother of two young athletes. In her research and her clinic, Dr. Rizzone places a strong focus on helping athletes, particularly female athletes, recover and return to the sport that they love. She is a team physician for the University of Rochester and College at Brockport (SUNY) and has previously covered Division I running teams, along with marathons and triathlons.

Dr. Rizzone specifically sees patients with stress fractures on Wednesday mornings. If you have such an injury, please mention it when making an appointment to get the earliest available slot.
