UR Medicine Running Clinic

Frequently Asked Questions

An injury or setback can put your active life on hold. Our team is committed to making sure you recover quickly, as well as help you understand why we’re taking the steps we are to get you back on your feet. Below are some frequently asked questions about the UR Medicine Running Clinic. If you have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to email us at runURMC@urmc.rochester.edu.

What should I wear?
Generally, clothes that are easy to move in are best for running evaluations, physical therapy and treatment sessions. Please bring the footwear that you currently use to run or play a sport in. For gait analysis, we ask that you wear tight-fitting clothes (leggings and workout tops, for example). This will help the physical therapist or athletic trainer capture the most accurate image of your body’s movement while running.

Do I need to see a doctor before coming to physical therapy?

Not necessarily, but we encourage patients to see Dr. Rizzone if they have a running-related injury prior to physical therapy. Some insurance plans will allow you to attend physical therapy sessions without a referral for 30 days. Talk with your insurance company about their policy regarding direct access for physical therapy.

How often do I need to come to physical therapy?
It all depends on the severity of your injury and your goals for recovery. Your doctor may indicate specifically how often you'll need to go to physical therapy. If not, you and your physical therapist will discuss an appropriate treatment plan and timeline during your first visit.

How long does it take to complete a running evaluation?
A running evaluation takes approximately 45 minutes. In that time, our team will test your strength, range of motion, flexibility and functional movements.

How do I get gait analysis and what does it include?
It is best to discuss with your physical therapist or athletic trainer whether gait analysis is appropriate for you. It can be difficult to perform a thorough run evaluation and gait analysis in the same visit. Gait analysis requires patients to run for at least 10 minutes straight. If you are returning from an injury, you may have to be cleared by a doctor prior to completing gait analysis.

Who can use the AlterG® Anti-Gravity Treadmill®?
Use of the AlterG® Anti-Gravity Treadmill® is only available for current patients. Discuss with your doctor or physical therapist whether this is an appropriate treatment option for you before calling 585-341-9200 to schedule a rehabilitation appointment.
