URMC Department Of Medicine

The Department of Medicine is the largest department at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.  There are 279 full-time and 19 part-time faculty and 171 voluntary faculty members in 10 units who are dedicated to excellence in research, teaching, and clinical care in internal medicine.  The Department of Medicine is a dynamic department, composed of a large and diverse full-time and voluntary faculty.  The department has an extraordinary group of 72 internal medicine residents and many outstanding sub-specialty fellowship programs (approximately 60 clinical fellows and 60 postdoctoral research fellows). 

Built upon a tradition of excellence forged by distinguished leaders, the Department of Medicine has continued on a path of rapid ascent in all arenas of academic medicine.  Dr. Bradford C. Berk (1999-present) is the eighth chairperson to lead the Department of Medicine.  A clear vision based on excellence in clinical care and growth in clinical and basic research grand support has assured the financial health of the department.

The attending internal medicine staff of the hospital is selected from members of the full-time and clinical faculty of the University of Rochester.  Approximately 230 of the beds at Strong Memorial Hospital are assigned to the Internal Medicine Service.  Faculty and residents care for the gamut of internal medicine disorders, from common primary care ailments to complex tertiary care issues, and patients come from around the globe to seek consultation from University of Rochester physicians.  Offices and laboratories for the full-time faculty are maintained in the buildings within the Medical Center, Kornberg Medical Research Building and the new MRBX.  Ambulatory patients are seen by full-time faculty members and trainees in the Department's clinics in the Ambulatory Care Center.
