Welcome to Geriatrics & Aging
The Division of Geriatrics & Aging, one of the Department of Medicine's newest divisions, serves as the academic home to geriatricians on faculty at the University of Rochester. The Division, consistently ranked among the best in the country, embraces several core values. These include an emphasis on leadership training, interdepartmental collaboration, community integration, educational innovation and the melding of medical practice and research within the long term care continuum.
The Division's thirty eight full time faculty span the entire health care continuum including acute, post-acute, and long-term care (nursing home; assisted living; home care). Monroe Community Hospital, Highland Hospital, the Rochester/Canandaigua VA Medical Center, Strong Memorial Hospital and Strong Health Geriatrics Group (a community based long-term care network) comprise the Division's major clinical and teaching sites. Many of the community's geriatric care needs are addressed through innovative outpatient and inpatient programs.
Research in the Division encompasses health services, clinical and interdisciplinary training initiatives. The Division has successfully competed for more than seven million dollars over the past few years representing projects supported by the NIH, VA, HRSA and the John A Hartford Foundation and other sources. Interdepartmental collaboration underpins much of the Division's success, most notably with nursing, psychiatry, psychology, developmental disabilities, emergency medicine, neurology and chiropractic. Partnerships with some of the region's premier academic centers, such as the Maxwell School at Syracuse University, have resulted in the creation of educational programs that help to define new policy and research directions.
Over just the past few years six faculty have been awarded Geriatric Academic Career Awards from the Health Resources and Service Administration. The Geriatric Medicine fellowship program prepares trainees for successful careers as clinicians, teachers and investigators.
