Richard I. Fisher, M.D., Director of the Cancer Center

Welcome to the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center. I hope that your experiences throughout your treatment and healing are positive and that you will soon join the millions of cancer survivors who are living full and productive lives after treatment.

We recognize that this is a difficult time for you and your family. A cancer diagnosis is frightening, and treatment decisions can be overwhelming. Our physicians, nurses and social workers will help you through this process by providing outstanding care, information and support.

Recently we opened a new, state-of-the-art cancer center, designed with patient comfort and convenience as the top priority. We have combined all of our outpatient care into a single, larger building, along with our research programs. Patients in our care enjoy unprecedented privacy in a healing environment, surrounded by natural lighting, beautiful artwork and compassionate caregivers.

The creation of a premier cancer center is more than bricks and mortar. It’s about bringing the best and brightest minds together for outstanding care and research. We have recruited 20 new faculty members to the Wilmot Cancer Center in the past few years. I am extremely proud of all of our physicians and staff for their dedication to finding causes and new treatments for cancer.

Our research efforts continue to grow and lead to new discoveries. The development of a vaccine to prevent cervical cancer began right her at the University of Rochester. Our team is studying techniques to detect disease earlier, to introduce new treatments that are less invasive, and to improve life after cancer. You can be assured that you will benefit from our efforts and there may be opportunities to receive novel therapies and treatments that could improve the treatment of your cancer.

Your care and comfort are top priorities for us, and our staff will be as responsive as possible to your concerns and needs. We welcome your thoughts and comments throughout your treatment with us.

Sincerely,

Richard I. Fisher, M.D., Director
