Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Radiothon
2014 Radiothon Sets Record High
Phones rang off the hook at the 2014 Drive for Miracles Radiothon, presented by Tops Friendly Markets. Patient families, medical professionals and volunteers from the community, and local businesses, showed their dedication to UR Medicine's Golisano Children's Hospital by helping raise more than $328,000, a record-breaking success -- $100,000 more than last year!
100.5 The Drive, WHAM 1180, and 13WHAM-TV teamed up for the two-day event February 13 and 14 to talk with grateful families and share stories of hope and healing with the community. The Drive’s J.P., Julie, Bill Moran and Mayor Pete Kennedy joined WHAM’s Chet Walker and Bob Lonsberry in talking with thankful parents, former Miracle Kid patients, and pediatric nurses and doctors who have each felt the impact of donations first hand.
Jennifer Johnson and Adam Chodak of 13WHAM-TV teamed up to do several live broadcasts on Valentine’s Day in memory of Jennifer's daughter and 2012 Miracle Kid "Amazing Grace" Esposito. Read more in Jennifer's blog post about the inspirational $350,000 commitment she and the 13WHAM team have made, which will name a special healing garden in remembrance of Grace. All of the money donated during the Radiothon on Friday will go toward Grace's fund for the children's hospital.
The radio emcees rallied through a total of 28 hours of on-air time, sharing hospital statistics, the need for advancing medical equipment, and hopes for the future children’s hospital.
The event would not have been such an immense success without support from the Rochester community. Volunteers from Abbott’s Frozen Custard, Inc., RE/MAX Plus, the Amerks, Tops Friendly Markets, Walmart, and University of Rochester sports teams – just to name a few – took calls from donors for a number of hours throughout each day. The Bishop-Kearney women’s basketball team also filled up the phone bank to show their support for fellow teammate and cardiac patient, Emmanuella Edoka, who recently signed to play Division I at Siena College in the fall.
In addition to taking calls, a number of organizations also sponsored the Radiothon, often matching amounts called-in by donors. Such enthusiasm and commitment to helping our patients really helped hit the event out of the park.
To make the two days even more special, Wisteria Flowers and Gifts, a long-time Golisano Children’s Hospital partner, donated colorful floral arrangements that were delivered right to patients’ bed sides as donors made monthly miracle maker pledges.
Golisano Children’s Hospital would like to sincerely thank Clear Channel radio and 13WHAM-TV for their tremendous commitment to this year’s Radiothon, as well as the families who shared their stories and volunteers who donated their time to make the 2014 Drive for Miracles Radiothon an unprecedented success. Your dedication and hard work continues to make miracles possible.
