photoAsk for a tour so you know what to expect. Our Child Life Specialists provide tours so families can see the unit, meet staff and learn about the hospital prior to admission. Contact them at (585) 275-9878 to schedule a time.

If you will require surgery, please view our surgical suite tour.

Get specifics about what is expected to happen. For example, it you are having a test or surgery, you will want to find out:

  • What will happen before the procedure?
  • How long will the procedure take?
  • Will any equipment be used that will startle or frighten me?
  • What will the procedure feel like?
  • Will you be awake, and if so, what will you be expected to do?
  • What will happen after the procedure?
  • What will you look like afterward? Will there be any swelling or bandages?
  • When can your parent or guardian be with you? Can they be there throughout the procedure or during recovery?
  • Will you have pain and how will it be managed?
  • Will your activity be restricted? If so, how and for how long?
  • How much, if any, school will you miss?

Ask your doctor or nurse for information packets and a list of specific resources you can use.

As you review all these materials, make a list of questions you want to ask. Don't be afraid to ask questions, we want to make sure you have all the information you want ahead of time.
