Getting Started for Graduate Students
Let us be among the many to congratulate and welcome you to graduate school at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry!
We’re planning an informative and entertaining orientation program that will introduce you to life as a University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry graduate student.
Throughout the fall, you will be faced with many new challenges and decisions. We hope to make your transition to graduate school a smooth one and prepare you for the wealth of exciting opportunities that will come before you.

A formal orientation program is not held for students starting in the spring semester. Students may reference the Getting Started Checklist above and also work with the SMD Registrar and the Graduate Program Administrator to get started during the spring semester.

Getting Started for Postdoctoral Appointees
Welcome and congratulations on your appointment as a Postdoctoral Appointee at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry!
The Office for Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs (GEPA) is the central office that supports the postdoctoral community in the School of Medicine and Dentistry. GEPA is here to help you, so please be sure to contact us if you have any questions, concerns, suggestions, etc.
While your Departmental Administrator will take care of the vast majority of details that must be attended to in order for you to get started with our institution, we in GEPA would also like to highlight a few important resources and opportunities:
Postdoctoral appointees are required to complete RCR education by completing the Ethics and Professional Integrity in Research course. The training must be completed as soon as possible upon the start of your appointment; the course is held during the Fall semester each year. Policy and Waiver Information

If you have not already done so, please make sure to attend the upcoming Benefits Orientation facilitated by the Office of Human Resources. You must sign up for health insurance within 30 days of hire.

You have the option of participating in a comprehensive health plan offered by the University Health Service. Visit the University Health Service (UHS) website for detailed information. A dental plan is also available through Eastman Dental and the Strong Memorial Hospital Department of Dentistry.
The URMC Postdoctoral Association (PDA) provides career development, networking and professional recognition opportunities. Getting involved in a PDA committee also provides invaluable real-world administrative experience that will look great on your CV!
