Research in Pediatric Endocrinology

Child Testing Sugar LevelsResearch projects in the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology at Golisano Children’s Hospital include studies of the role that hormones play in normal and abnormal development. The main focus of the Division’s research activities is type 1 diabetes mellitus. The Division is a participant in TrialNet, a multi-centered network dedicated to the study, prevention of type 1 diabetes. In addition, research is being conducted through the NIH-funded Autoimmunity Center of Excellence to develop a mechanistic understanding of type 1 diabetes.

Research Areas of Interest

  • Participation in TrialNet, a multi-centered network dedicated to the study and prevention of type 1 diabetes
  • Research through the NIH-funded Autoimmunity Center of Excellence to develop a mechanistic understanding of type 1 diabetes
  • Advantages and disadvantages of continuous insulin administration by an external pump as well as continuous blood glucose monitoring
  • Participation in multi-center immunology of type 1 diabetes research
  • The relationship between bone health and fracture risk and diabetes
  • Evaluation of in-school diabetes management and factors affecting metabolic control and long-term outcome in diabetes
  • Relationships between body composition, bone health, and chronic disease in the pediatric population with type 1 diabetes
  • Development of new techniques using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to better understand the relationship between body composition and cardiometabolic disease in a variety of childhood disorders.
  • Collaborative research with orthopedics to develop special laboratory techniques for the measurement of bone precursor cells and to understand their function

Research Areas by Investigator

  • Craig C. Orlowski, M.D.
Dr. Orlowski has been involved in a multi-center industry sponsored study investigating the utility of continuous glucose sensor technology in the care of children with Type 1 diabetes. He is a co-investigator with Dr. Jospe in the TrialNet study.
  • Britta M. Svoren, M.D.
Dr. Svoren Investigates environmental factors on the development of pancreatic autoimmunity, the immunologic response, and the onset of type 1 diabetes. She is interested in preventing complications and preserving health for pediatric patients with diabetes, including outcomes and translational research activities. She also assesses innovative technologies, like continuous glucose monitoring.

Current Projects

  • Inducing Remission in New Onset t1dm with Alefacept: Phase II clinical trial for individuals with recent-onset T1DM, Immune Tolerance Network 045AI
  • Subcontract, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to Benaroya Research Institute, Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason
  • Trial Net – Natural History Study of The Development of Type I Diabetes, University of South Florida: The division has participated in TrialNet studies since its inception more than a decade ago. We enroll patients and their families to support TrialNet’s mission which is to prevent type 1 diabetes and stop disease progression by preserving insulin production before and after diagnosis.
  • Participation in large longitudinal study of bone accrual in children and adolescents newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The goal of this research is to understand the reasons for impaired bone health in patients with type 1 diabetes so that we can develop and evaluate therapeutic interventions aimed at improving bone strength.
  • Longitudinal Evaluation of Bone Density and Structure in Children and Adolescents with Incident Type 1 Diabetes
  • Assessment of Calcium Intake in the Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes Population
  • Evaluation of Hypercalciuria in Youth with Type 1 Diabetes
  • Assessment of Calcium Metabolism in Adolescent Girls with Type 1 Diabetes
  • Safety and Efficacy of Chlorthalidone to Reduce Urinary Calcium Excretion in Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes
  • An Observational Longitudinal, Prospective, Long-Term Registry of Patients with Hyophosphatasia
  • Evaluation of Endocrine and Bone Health Care Received by Patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in MDSTARnet
