Where and When Will My Insurance Pay for One?
- Most provide a pump from a local medical equipment store (DME)
- Some insurances provide a pump from a national supplier
- Call your insurance’s customer service number on your card before you deliver! ASK:
- Where can I get my pump? Local DME (store in Rochester area, ship to home) or National (ship to home only)?
- Is there a specific breast pump that is covered, or is it up to me?
- Can I get my pump before I deliver?
Which Pump Should I Get?
Many double electric pumps can pump both sides at the same time and work well. BUT, some pumps can cause more harm than good...Talk to a Lactation Consultant or UR HOME

Breast Pump Rental: Providing Milk for Your Baby with a Medical Need
Your insurance may cover the full rental cost of a hospital grade double electric pump if your baby is in the hospital after birth. This type of pump can help you to make more milk, faster, and more comfortably.

National
National Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Suppliers – All accept BC/BS, Aetna, Excellus BC/BS, Cigna. Medicaid coverage varies depending on your specific plan – below suppliers accept Fidelis Care. You would need to call for other Medicaid plans.
Visit their websites for information on whether your insurance is accepted. Some will have only one pump option available for your insurance provider; another supplier may list several you can choose from.
National suppliers may take your call/online order up to 30 days before your due date. They may take 7–10 business days for processing and delivery. Most do not have ability for you to "upgrade" your pump – that is to select a different breast pump than your insurance covers, even if you pay the difference.
