Guide to Lead Poisoning Prevention

Lead poisoning is dangerous, but what your child eats can help prevent lead poisoning. Foods that are high in calcium and iron protect the body against lead. Foods high in fat do not protect the body against lead.

Foods High in Calcium

  • Puddings or custards made with low fat or skim milk
  • Cheese, including cottage cheese
  • Salmon, with bones
  • Okra
  • Yogurt
  • Broccoli
  • Cream soups

Foods High in Iron

  • Iron-fortified cereals, such as oatmeal, grits, and Total
  • Lean red meats
  • Spinach and other greens (kale, collard)
  • Prune juice
  • Dried beans or peas
  • Raisins and other dried fruit
  • Clams, shrimp

Food High in Fat (Avoid These)

  • Whole milk
  • Bologna, salami, bacon, sausage
  • Potato chips, pork rinds
  • Mayonnaise, butter, fat, salad dressings, oil
  • French fries
  • Donuts and other baked goods
