Second Hand Smoke Facts

Consider these startling facts about the affects of second hand smoke:

  • Each year 8,000-26,000 children will develop asthma as a result of a parent who smoked at least 10 cigarettes a day.
  • Each year 200,000-1,000,000 children have their asthma worsened by second hand smoke.
  • Enrollment in a smoking cessation program such as NYQUITS more than doubles a person's chance of quitting.
  • Second hand smoke is as serious health hazard and can be related to sudden infant death syndrome, ear infections, and increase the need for ear surgery.
  • Second hand smoke exposure occurs in an estimated 22 million children aged 3 -11 years and 18 million youth aged 12-19 years.
  • Infants and young children whose parents smoke are at higher risk of infections such as colds, pneumonia, bronchitis, and bronchiolitis (RSV).
