Pediatric Surgery Roadmap

This surgery roadmap was created to give families of children coming in for surgery a big picture of the surgery experience. Each patient's experience will vary a bit based on the surgery, the age of the patient, and other factors, but the roadmap gives families a general idea of what to expect.

1: Surgeon’s Office

What to Expect:

  1. Procedures to expect
  2. Holding food and drink before procedure
  3. Expected day of surgery arrival time
  4. Expected length of stay
  5. Parking information
  6. Post-operative pain expectations and management

2: Waiting Room

What to Expect:

  1. Check in with the front desk.
  2. The nurses will come get you to share information.

3: Pre-Anesthesia

What to Expect:

  1. Ensure holding food and drink instruction are followed
  2. Verify and consent to procedures
  3. Type of anesthesia
  4. Information about pain during and immediately after surgery

4: Operation

What to Expect:

  1. Where caregivers will wait during the operation
  2. Regular updates will be provided by the care team.
  3. You will receive a text or call when the operation is finished.

5: Post-Anesthesia

What to Expect:

  1. Reunion with caregivers
  2. Monitoring of Pain Score and Vitals
  3. Pain Management (via medications, positioning, distraction)
  4. Discharge Instructions (After Visit Instructions)

6: Room Relocation or Discharge Home

Room Relocation: Move to a unit where they will monitor pain and activity

Discharge Home: We can provide directions for leaving the hospital and instructions for comfort and safety at home.
