Pediatric Surgery Roadmap
This surgery roadmap was created to give families of children coming in for surgery a big picture of the surgery experience. Each patient's experience will vary a bit based on the surgery, the age of the patient, and other factors, but the roadmap gives families a general idea of what to expect.

1: Surgeon’s Office
What to Expect:
- Procedures to expect
- Holding food and drink before procedure
- Expected day of surgery arrival time
- Expected length of stay
- Parking information
- Post-operative pain expectations and management
2: Waiting Room
What to Expect:
- Check in with the front desk.
- The nurses will come get you to share information.
3: Pre-Anesthesia
What to Expect:
- Ensure holding food and drink instruction are followed
- Verify and consent to procedures
- Type of anesthesia
- Information about pain during and immediately after surgery
4: Operation
What to Expect:
- Where caregivers will wait during the operation
- Regular updates will be provided by the care team.
- You will receive a text or call when the operation is finished.
5: Post-Anesthesia
What to Expect:
- Reunion with caregivers
- Monitoring of Pain Score and Vitals
- Pain Management (via medications, positioning, distraction)
- Discharge Instructions (After Visit Instructions)
6: Room Relocation or Discharge Home
Room Relocation: Move to a unit where they will monitor pain and activity
Discharge Home: We can provide directions for leaving the hospital and instructions for comfort and safety at home.
