A new study out today in Neurology, provides the first evidence that rigorous visual training restores rudimentary sight in patients who went partially blind after suffering a stroke. Patients who did not train on the other hand, continued to get progressively worse, which challenges conventional wisdom that cortically blind patients’ visual deficits stabilize six months after stroke.

URMC researchers have developed a new imaging technique that allowed the first glimpse of individual cells in the retina, a layer of tissue at the back of the eye. The new technique could allow earlier diagnosis and treatment for diseases like glaucoma and prevent vision loss caused by death of these retinal cells.
