School-Based Asthma Care for Teens (SB-ACT)

School-Based Asthma Care for Teens (SB-ACT) aims to increase personal motivation to adhere to preventive asthma care and thereby reduce morbidity in teens ages 12-15 in the Rochester City School District. SB-ACT utilizes elements from our previous studies such as School Based Asthma Therapy (SBAT) and School-Based Telemedicine Enhanced Asthma Management (SB-TEAM), combining delivery of preventive asthma medications in schools as directly observed therapy (DOT), with independence-building motivational interviewing (MI) sessions. Community-based nurses trained in MI will conduct counseling sessions with teens to promote intrinsic motivation to independently adhere to preventive asthma medications. Making use of the existing infrastructure in schools for DOT and counseling, SB-ACT provides a cohesive model of preventive asthma care for teens designed to be replicable in other communities.
