Just for Men: Getting Healthier as You Age

May. 30, 2014
Take a step toward a healthier lifestyle by joining UR Medicine for Men’s Health Day on Friday, June 13, at Mario’s Italian Steakhouse in Rochester. Men who understand their symptoms and their risk factors for disease are better equipped to proactively take care of their well-being, says UR Medicine urologist Dr. Jean Joseph, who is organizing the event for the tenth time.

It’s not enough just to treat illness; we want to help men avoid it in the first place. We see far too many patients who’ve waited until the last minute before seeking medical care–many of whom are suffering illnesses that could have been avoided. Most of these patients are men.
Heart disease, stroke and cancer take an alarming toll every year on men in our country. There is a reason why women in nursing homes significantly outnumber men: men are dying five years earlier, leaving their friends and families to cope without them.
Education and self-awareness are the first steps to reversing the statistics. Men’s Health Day provides an informal forum where men can get solid information and feel free to ask questions. If you are a man age 45 or older, I encourage you to attend. If you are a woman who cares about an older man, please pass this information on and urge him to attend.
