New imaging machines designed to take kids to the open seas

When the new Golisano Children's Hospital opens in July it will feature great new technology in a dedicated pediatric imaging suite, with a new PET/MRI, CT scan, family waiting area, and more. 

The PET/MRI is one of the most exciting pieces of technology in our new building. Golisano Children’s Hospital is the first hospital in upstate New York, and the first children’s hospital in the nation, to have a PET/MRI, an integrated and innovative technology. Combining the two imaging technologies in one device means a child will undergo one imaging procedure instead of two, with less radiation exposure.

The exterior environments of the PET/MRI, a pirate ship, and our CT scan, a lighthouse, were designed by Dream Think Imagine (DTI). DTI is a design company with a mission "to create innovative, multi-sensory solutions that contribute to a positive health care experience for patients of all ages and engage them in healing the mind, body and spirit." 

While the pirate ship still needs one more piece to be complete, it already looks spectacular. The ship is officially called the "S.S. Rochester" and has the University of Rochester's motto "Meliora," meaning "ever better," on its side. 

The CT scan is in the shape of a lighthouse and a seagull will keep watch overhead as patients are treated.
