2nd Annual Walk/Run Aims to Raise Awareness and Funds for Colon Cancer Research

Feb. 21, 2013

Committed to engaging the greater Rochester community in the fight against colon cancer, the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) is sponsoring the 2nd annual Strollin’ for the Colon 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, April 20, in Geneseo.

The 5K begins and ends at Cottone Auction House, 120 Court St. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. Runners will start the course at 10 a.m. and walkers will begin at 10:05 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to first-place racers in each age category.

A highlight of this year’s event will be Coco the Colossal Colon®, a 40-foot long, 4-foot tall oversized model of the human colon that is designed to educate about colorectal cancer and other diseases of the colon. Visitors who crawl through The Colossal Colon will see examples of Crohn’s disease, diverticulosis, ulcerative colitis, hemorrhoids, cancerous and non-cancerous polyps, and various stages of colon cancer.

Other event activities include a chicken barbecue at noon for $10.00 per person, a silent auction and raffles from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and live music featuring the band Trilogy.

Registration for the event is $20 per person in advance, $25 on race day, and includes a free t-shirt. Entrants are invited to collect and submit additional donations. Proceeds will go toward colon cancer research at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center, development of cancer awareness programs through URMC’s Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and the Livingston County Department of Health Cancer Prevention Program.

“Many of us have had parents, siblings, and friends who’ve had colon cancer,” said Tina Cottone, chair of the organizing committee. “Working in the Gastroenterology Division, we appreciate the value and importance of education and screening and know first-hand that it can help save lives.”
