3rd Annual Walk/Run to Benefit Colon Cancer Education, Research
UR Medicine’s Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology will sponsor the 3rd annual Strollin’ for the Colon 5K Walk/Run beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, in Geneseo.
Colon cancer—the second most common cause of cancer deaths in the U.S.—is preventable if detected at an early stage.
“Awareness of screening for this preventable disease is urgently needed in our region,” said 5K chair Tina Cottone, a gastroenterology nurse at UR Medicine’s Strong Memorial Hospital. “This event will help support colon cancer research at the UR Medicine's Wilmot Cancer Center, as well as cancer awareness programs through UR Medicine’s Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the Livingston County Cancer Services Program, and the Cancer Services Program of Monroe County.
Registration for the 5K is $25 per person in advance, $30 on race day. The first 250 to register will get a free t-shirt. Entrants are invited to collect and submit additional donations.
The event will also feature a kids’ run that will follow the main race, educational sessions by gastroenterology specialists, lunch by GioVanna’s Pizza and Pasta for $10.00 per person, a silent auction and raffles from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and live music featuring the band Trilogy.
“Many of us have had family and friends who’ve had colon cancer,” said Cottone. “Working in the Gastroenterology Division, we appreciate the value and importance of education and screening and know first-hand that it can help save lives.”
