“Never underestimate the power of a smile!”

Wise advice from Frank Guido to the person who will take his place next week. After 27 years of service at the University of Rochester and more than a decade at Eastman Institute for Oral Health, Frank is retiring.

“A smile can completely change how a person reacts to his or her entire visit,” he said. He would know. Frank is the first person people see when they enter the lobby at EIOH’s main clinic on Elmwood Ave. They could be in pain, seeking urgent dental care. They could be lost or stressed, late for an appointment.

Whether answering questions or helping people find their way, Frank has been a reassuring presence for patients, faculty and staff.

The most common questions he receives: Is this Eastman Dental emergency? Does Eastman Dental pull teeth? Do you validate parking tickets?

Working with the public at a busy clinic can lead to unpredictable situations and events. No matter what the day brought, Frank’s calm presence and guidance were invaluable.

“The easiest way to handle a problem when dealing with the public is to never let it happen Always try to stay ahead of events and always listen to the question that the patient is asking you with your full attention,” Frank shared. “The answer is often to be found within their question.”

In 2020, Frank received the EIOH Director’s Award for his exemplary service and dedication throughout the Covid pandemic. He cites his efforts helping patients and staff navigate that unpredictable and challenging time as his proudest accomplishment.

He was also named the University of Rochester Medicine’s inaugural Guest Services Representative of the Year in 2025, recognizing his longstanding commitment to providing a smooth experience for patients visiting EIOH, even throughout major renovations and other challenges.

Though his daily greetings at EIOH are coming to an end, Frank has plenty of reasons to smile about what comes next.

An avid photographer, Frank is looking forward to having more time for his hobbies, to explore the beauty of the Finger Lakes and Adirondak regions, and to engage in activities in the local community.

But the first thing he’s going to do? “Permanently remove the 5:00AM alarm from my iPhone!”

Frank may be leaving the front desk, but the warmth and kindness he brought to Eastman will leave a lasting impression.
