Cardiologists Set Valentine’s Day Heart Screening at Strong Memorial Hospital

University of Rochester Medical Center cardiologists will offer free heart disease screenings from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, Feb. 14, at Strong Memorial Hospital Lobby. This is part of the Medical Centerâs community outreach efforts to mark American Heart Month.
Participants can receive blood pressure and oxygenation screenings and body mass index readings, all indicators of heart problems. Doctors and nurses will also provide tips for improving heart health. Parking is available in the ramp garage.
Each year, cardiovascular diseases top the list of the country's most serious health problems. Studies show that people can reduce their risk by following a proper diet, appropriate exercise program and routine healthcare plan, and by eliminating tobacco products.
According to the American Heart Association, about one third of all Americans have some form of heart disease, including high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke and other conditions. By 2030, experts estimate that about 40 percent of people in the United States, or 116 million, will have some form of cardiovascular disease.
The Medical Center has a long history of providing comprehensive expertise in all specialties of clinical cardiovascular medicine, with regional dominance in electrophysiology, heart failure, heart transplantation, vascular medicine, aortic surgery and pediatric heart surgery. The Department of Cardiology has nationally recognized research programs in vascular medicine, atrial fibrillation, ablation, hereditary arrhythmias and use of artificial hearts for heart failure patients.
The research of cardiologist Arthur Moss, M.D., whose work with heart-rhythm disorders and implantable cardioverter defibrillators has changed the treatment of heart disease worldwide and saved the lives of countless patients, continues to serve as an archetype that is influencing current and future research endeavors.
