The Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Rochester’s (IFCK) Kohl’s Pedal Patrol program will celebrate a $72,790 grant from Kohl’s Cares for Kids® from noon to 2 p.m., Aug. 24, at this year’s Fairport Music and Food Festival. Co-created with Golisano Children’s Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), Kohl’s Pedal Patrol provides education and awareness about bicycle safety to Rochester-area youth. Bike safety experts will be on hand to advocate for safe biking practices with educational and interactive games, as well as informational brochures.
The money supplied by Kohl’s Cares® will go toward enhancing Kohl’s Pedal Patrol and the different outreach programs organized by IFCK. In addition to promoting safety at community events, including health fairs, Kohl’s Pedal Patrol also hosts bike rodeos and provides helmets and fittings to anyone in need.
Based out of Golisano Children’s Hospital, IFCK is made up of groups, organizations and agencies dedicated to reducing preventable injuries and deaths among children in the community.
The Fairport Music and Food Festival, which attracts thousands of people from the Rochester area, is a great location to promote safety messages. Families and their children will have the opportunity to ask experts questions and to also play a carnival-style spin-the-wheel game with prize giveaways. At 1 p.m., the Victor Assistant Store Manager, Sara Mastronadi, will present the Kohl’s Cares for Kids grant to Anne Brayer, M.D., program director of Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Rochester and pediatrician in Emergency Medicine at URMC, at the South (canal) stage.
“With Kohl’s support, we are able to integrate safety messages deeper into our community, engaging youth along the way,” Brayer said. “Together, we are working toward reducing the incidence of bike-related emergency visits and (are) ultimately, saving lives.”
