City, URMC to Hold Women’s Health Screening Fair at the Market
The City of Rochester and the University of Rochester Medical Center will hold the first Women’s Health Screening Fair at the Market, part of Rochester Women’s Health Week, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19.
The fair will offer free, hands-on screenings for such conditions as cardiac and kidney disease, glaucoma, asthma, bone disease, skin cancer, HIV, lead exposure and diabetes at the Public Market, 280 N. Union St. Physicians and mid-level care providers will be on site.
“Providing access to health care to women most in need isn’t just an important goal, but it is essential to the success of our community,” Mayor Robert J. Duffy said. “As the country continues its dialogue on health care reform, the Rochester community will seek ways to bring outstanding care to the masses. The Women’s Health Screening Fair at the Market is a prime example.”
The Mayor will proclaim Sept. 15 to 19 as Rochester Women’s Health Week. The idea for the week grew out of a desire in 2008 to put on a series of health seminars for the region’s professionals that would address clinical issues and the effects that environmental factors have on women’s health, in conjunction with WXXI’s very popular community program, Speaking of Women’s Health.
“Promoting women's health requires personal responsibility but also community action. The Women’s Health Screening Fair at the Market, as part of Rochester Women's Health Week, confirms this commitment,” said James R. Woods Jr., M.D., URMC’s chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology. “Spend an hour with us, and we will give you back a lifetime of health.”
Other key events taking place during the week are:
· Tuesday, Sept. 15, Rochester Riverside Convention Center: Clinical Challenges of Women’s Health. URMC will host a one-day clinical program for primary care doctors and nurses, internists and ob/gyns directed at discussing the wide range of health issues that bring women into their offices. Lectures will address stroke prevention, skin cancer screening, incontinence, peri-menopausal symptoms, headaches, heart disease, depression and back pain.
· Wednesday, Sept. 16, University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry: Researching Women’s Environmental Health. URMC will hold a one-day research conference for academicians, public officials and community activists directed at reviewing what we know about environmental exposures (plastics, hormones in food, etc.) and their effects on women’s health in general, and pregnancy health in particular. The morning will offer lectures by internationally recognized individuals, followed by an afternoon spent examining how to translate these findings to the public, the media and clinical providers.
· Thursday, Sept. 17, Rochester Riverside Convention Center: Speaking of Women’s Health. WXXI will hold its seventh annual conference featuring 18 breakout sessions on a variety of health topics and women’s issues, keynote speaker presentations, free health screenings, plus a continental breakfast, lunch and a gift bag full of treats from sponsors.
These three days are a perfect progressive triad – addressing relevant topics for the clinical community, research community and the community-at-large, culminating with the Women’s Health Screening Fair at the Market, which organizers hope to make an annual event.
