Comprehensive Breast Care Center to Host Fifth Annual Breast Health Day

The Comprehensive Breast Care Center at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center will be holding its fifth annual Breast Health Day, a free educational event for the community. The session takes place Saturday, October 15, from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm at the Wilmot Cancer Center. There is no registration fee, and free parking and brunch are also included.

Breast Health Day falls in the middle of Breast Cancer Awareness month and offers participants the opportunity to get valuable information about breast cancer, including genetic and non-genetic risk factors. Kristin Skinner, M.D., Director of the Multi-Disciplinary Breast Cancer Program at the Wilmot Cancer Center and Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Rochester Medical Center will offer a presentation on Non-Genetic Risk Factors in Breast Cancer. Her research has been funded by the American Cancer Society, the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program and the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Lauren Smith, C.S.G., a certified genetic counselor at URMC’s department of Genetics, will then address the topic of Genetic Risk Factors in Cancer. Individuals who have an inherited susceptibility often develop cancer at a younger age than others and therefore surveillance should start earlier than is customary.

Community resources for breast cancer patients and their families will also be highlighted, and the day will conclude with optional tours of the Wilmot Cancer Center.
