Cub Scout Derby Car Goes Pink to Help Women with Breast Cancer

Bryan Mosbruger painted his pinewood derby car pink and is helping support women with breast cancer at the Wilmot Cancer Center.

Cub Scout Bryan Mosbruger won the pinewood derby race within his North Chili Pack 292 and now he’s helping the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center in the race to find a cure for breast cancer. The third-grader painted his hand-made car pink in his personal effort to raise awareness about breast cancer and funds for research and will compete in another pinewood derby competition at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 10, at The Mall at Greece Ridge.

Bryan, 9, chose the unlikely color for his racecar because he was concerned about women who face breast cancer. He wanted to take action and in addition to putting the pink ribbon on his car, he hopes to raise $1,000 to support patients and research at the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Wilmot Cancer Center, the region’s leader in cancer care.

“Bryan is an impressive young man who is clearly learning the valuable Scouting lessons of community service and leadership. We’re grateful for his enthusiasm,” said Kristin Skinner, M.D., director of the Comprehensive Breast Care Center at the Wilmot Cancer Center.

The Fairbanks Road Elementary School pupil talked with his fellow Scouts about his project and he quickly collected $170 from generous parents. Then Bryan and his family -- parents Gary and Lisa, and brothers, Jon and Alan -- helped him place collection jars at area businesses, which has generated more than $500 so far.  

Canisters are located at Cam’s Pizzeria in Spencerport, Family Video, Jitters and The Glue Factory in North Chili, Subway in Chili Center, TLC’s Hallmark Store in Chili-Paul Plaza, Nick’s Deli in Chili, and North Chili Family Restaurant.
