Dr. Dimitrios Michelogiannakis Promoted to Program Director

Dr. Dimitrios Michelogiannakis (Ortho ’17, MS ’17) has been appointed program director of the Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics Residency Program at Eastman Institute for Oral Health. He has been serving as a full-time faculty member since his graduation and was recently promoted to associate professor.

“Dr. Michelogiannakis has served as assistant program director over the last years, which will ensure a seamless transition to full-time program director,” said Dr. Emile Rossouw, chair, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.

Dr. Michelogiannakis, who serves as secretary of the American Dental Education Association’s Section on Orthodontics, was recently awarded the 2022 Orthodontic Faculty Development Fellowship Award by the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation (AAOF), as well as the 2022 American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) Full Time Faculty Fellowship Award. He was previously awarded the 2020 Subtelny, Baker, Eastman Teaching Fellowship Award by AAOF indicating his continuous commitment towards teaching and academic excellence.

His research is focused on the influence of local and systemic factors on orthodontic tooth movement, translational research, and clinical studies regarding orthodontic treatment mechanics, patient expectations, and treatment outcomes. He has contributed to some 50 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and two book chapters. Dr. Michelogiannakis recently was accepted as an affiliate member of the prestigious Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists.

“I am very honored to serve as program director, and will do my best to honor the standards of our institution,” Dr. Michelogiannakis said. “I am also very grateful to Dr. Rossouw for his mentorship all these years and for entrusting me with the new responsibilities.”
