Cyril Meyerowitz, Eastman Institute for Oral Health director

Cyril Meyerowitz, D.D.S, M.S, director of Eastman Institute for Oral Health, was presented the Foundations of Excellence in Research Award from the New York State Dental Foundation. The award recognizes his commitment to applying creative, science-based methods to foster greater understanding of and to improve overall oral health.

Professor and chair of Dentistry since 1991, Meyerowitz has provided 20 years of leadership to Eastman Dental. After the merger with the University of Rochester Medical Center in 1998, he was instrumental in establishing one integrated entity—the Eastman Institute for Oral Health – responsible for research, education and clinical care in dentistry at URMC.

During those years, Meyerowitz led Eastman Dental and URMC to become a national model in oral health graduate education, research, clinical care, and community service. Increased services throughout the community and a first-of-its-kind urgent care clinic have dramatically improved access to care for the underserved.

Meyerowitz is very active in the dental profession regionally and nationally. He is chair of the New York State Academic Dental Centers, and has recently served as chair of the Council on Dental Education and Licensure, an American Dental Association agency dedicated to improving U.S. dental education, licensure and credentialing. Other recent posts include serving on the ADA’s Commission on Dental Accreditation, and the American Dental Education Association’s Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education. He is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and the American College of Dentists, and is a frequent keynote speaker at oral health meetings around the world.

Previous winners include Regina Landesberg, D.M.D., Alice Horowitz, R.D.H., M.A. Ph.D., Daniel H. Fine, D.M.D., and Irwin Mandel, D.D.S.

Eastman Institute for Oral Health is a world leader in research, clinical care, and post-doctoral education in general and pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics and oral surgery. Patients are seen at many sites throughout the Rochester community.
