EIOH’s Dr. Jin Xiao Tapped for ADA Council on Scientific Affairs
The American Dental Association has appointed Eastman Institute for Oral Health Associate Professor Jin Xiao, DDS, PhD (GenDen ’13, GPR ’14) to its Council on Scientific Affairs. The prestigious Council is comprised of about 20 renowned U.S. oral health researchers and clinicians who assist the ADA in developing policies that sustain the science basis of the dental profession, while supporting product standards and evaluation, research priorities, safety and efficacy of patient procedures, the ADA Seal of Acceptance Program and much more.
"I am enthusiastic about accepting this role and collaborating with fellow ADA members on projects and subcommittees within the Council on Scientific Affairs,” Dr. Xiao said. “Together, we can enhance our comprehension of scientific evidence and its role in improving the oral health of the population.”
Because of Dr. Xiao’s scientific expertise in cariology research, clinical and translational research in maternal and infant oral health, her expertise in oral microbiome and mDentistry, she was nominated and selected by the ADA Board of Trustees for a four-year term.
To ensure that the Council’s work is meaningful to practicing dentists, members are sought who have both research experience and clinical practice experience. The Council seeks out scientific leaders who have experience in scientific processes and research and are widely published. The ability to objectively analyze and review information from all areas of science and apply knowledge and expertise to reach an objective, informed, and scientifically sound conclusion is a critical member requirement. Other criteria includes experience applying these scientific principles in order to assist the Council with implementing many of its programs, such as standards development, professional and over-the-counter product evaluations, and the ADA Research Agenda.
Dr. Xiao exceeds these requirements. In the last few years, she has been awarded multiple grants, teaches master’s level classes, mentors PhD students and treats patients regularly each week.
Dr. Xiao serves as principal investigator for significant grants awarded from National Institute for Dental And Craniofacial Research, the National Science Foundation and the National Center for Advancing Translational Research to study innovative ways to prevent and treat severe tooth decay in children. She and several experts at the University of Rochester are using AI and other technologies to help with early detection and improve access to dental treatment for underserved populations.

Jin Xiao earned her DDS in 2003 and PhD in oral microbiology in 2009 from West China College of Stomatology, Sichuan University in China. She completed her last two years of PhD study in the Center of Oral Biology, University of Rochester, followed by one year postdoctoral training there.
