Free Physicals Offered by School of Medicine for Rochester Area Students

University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry students, faculty and residents again will conduct free physicals for Rochester area students on three evenings in August and September.

The School of Medicine and Dentistry has provided free physicals to more than 2,000 students in the last seven years.

Students routinely need a physical for school, sports activities or work permits. New York State requires a physical for new entrants to a school and students entering kindergarten, first, second, fourth, seventh and tenth grades.

The physicals, which are free of charge, will be given from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Aug. 16, Aug. 23, and Sept. 6 at the School of Medicine and Dentistry, 415 Elmwood Avenue.

Parking at the School of Medicine and Dentistry lot also is free.

No appointments are necessary, but physicals will be given only to the first 125 students at each session.

Those receiving a free physical examination will have evaluations of their vision, body mass index (BMI), height/weight and if necessary a mental health screening, EKG/ECG and immunizations. Those between the ages of 11 and 19 must complete a risk assessment survey—without assistance or participation from parents or guardians—and have counseling related to safety and prevention of risky behavior.

The risk assessment survey and counseling are required parts of the free physicals for those aged 11 to 19. Requests for partial physicals or physicals without participation in the risk assessment survey and counseling will not be honored. 

Students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian or have a signed parental consent form. Schools can provide consent forms.
