Kohl’s Department Stores Features $5 Winnie the Pooh Books and Plush Toys to Benefit Golisano Children’s Hospital

Sep. 22, 2010
Kohl's Pedal Patrol will hold a bike rodeo from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, at the Harvest Jamboree, located at the City of Rochester's Farmer's Market.

Kohl’s Department Stores  is offering Winnie the Pooh books and plush toys and a cookbook Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Foodby Jessica Seinfeld. The books and exclusive plush toys are available now through the end of September at more than 1,000 Kohl’s stores nationwide and online at Kohls.com. Kohl’s will donate 100 percent of the net profit to children’s health and educational opportunities nationwide including the Injury Free Coalition’s Kohl’s Pedal Patrol, based out of Golisano Children’s Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

The Winnie the Pooh books and plush toys are the newest offering from the Kohl’s Cares® cause merchandise program. Since the program’s inception in 2000, Kohl’s has turned $5 merchandise into more than $150 million to help make a positive difference in the lives of children.

Over the past four years, Kohl’s Caresâ has given more than $300,000 to support Kohl’s Pedal Patrol. Kohl’s Pedal Patrol developed out of the Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Rochester (IFCKR) as a program devoted to preventing bike-related injuries among children in the greater Rochester area. Members of IFCKR hold bike rodeos, attend health fairs, develop bike safety messages and distribute helmets to advocate bike safety on behalf of Kohl’s Pedal Patrol. IFCKR is made up of groups, organizations and agencies dedicated to reducing preventable injuries and deaths among children in the community.

“In 2009, we saw more than 300 children in our emergency department who were injured while riding a bike,” said Anne Brayer, M.D., director of IFCKR and pediatrician in URMC’s Emergency Medicine Department. “Thanks to Kohl’s, we have been able to create an entire program centered on educating children about bike safety. Together, we are making a huge difference in the lives of children in the Rochester-area community and are ultimately saving lives.”

In addition to the merchandise program, Kohl's Cares features a scholarship program, which recognizes more than 2,100 young volunteers with a total of $410,000 in scholarships and prizes this year; the Associates in Action program, which encourages associate volunteerism and provided more than $10 million in grants to youth-focused nonprofit organizations last year alone; and fundraising gift cards for schools and youth-serving organizations.
