Kohl’s Pedal Patrol Celebrates Gift with Bike Safety Event
Kohl's Department Store, through the Kohl’s Cares for Kids®program, will partner with Golisano Children’s Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) to host a special bike safety event for local kids between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 27, at the City of Rochester’s Harvest Jamboree.
The safety event will celebrate Kohl’s gift of $66,903. The donations were collected from Kohl’s stores located in the Rochester area. Kohl’s has gifted approximately $250,000 to URMC since 2004. The event will include a bike rodeo with bike safety games, a helmet give-away and a coloring contest. At the event, Matt Lashway, regional manager for Rochester’s Kohl’s stores, will present the donation check to Anne Brayer, M.D., director of Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Rochester (IFCKR).
“The importance of helmets cannot be overstated,” said Brayer, “Thanks to Kohl’s, we have been able to create an entire program centered on educating children about bike safety. Together, we are working toward reducing the incidence of bike-related emergency visits and ultimately saving lives.”
Kohl’s Pedal Patrol developed out of IFCKR as a program devoted to preventing bike-related injuries among children in the greater Rochester area. Members of IFCKR hold bike rodeos, attend health fairs, develop bike safety messages and distribute helmets to advocate bike safety on behalf of Kohl’s Pedal Patrol. IFCKR is made up of groups, organizations and agencies dedicated to reducing preventable injuries and deaths among children in the community. The coalition is based out of Golisano Children’s Hospital.
Kohl's commitment to Golisano Children’s Hospitalis made possible through the Kohl's Cares for Kidsâ program, which raises funds for children’s health and educational opportunities through the sale of $5 books and plush toys. All of the net profits go toward supporting hospital partnerships like this one. The size of the gift varies each year, depending on how many customers purchased the charity merchandise; Golisano Children’s Hospital benefits from the store promotions at Kohl’s stores located in Henrietta, Greece and Webster.
