Nobel Laureate Speaking at School of Medicine & Dentistry

The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry is welcoming Nobel Laureate Thomas R. Cech, Ph.D. this month. Cech will deliver two talks in conjunction with the school’s third annual Medical Scientist Research Symposium. The talks will be held in the Class of ’62 Auditorium. They are free of charge and open to the U of R community.

Cech was awarded the 1989 Nobel Prize for Chemistry after discovering RNA molecules are not simply passive carriers of genetic information – they also facilitate chemical reactions within cells. Ensuing research has led to significant new insights into the underlying mechanisms of cancer as well as the aging process.

Cech has been elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine, and has been awarded a lifetime professorship by the American Cancer Society. He is distinguished professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at University of Colorado Boulder and an investigator at Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

The Medical Scientist Research Symposium showcases the accomplishments of students enrolled in the rigorous Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP). The event also promotes interaction, discussion and collaboration between MSTP students and research faculty from throughout the U of R. MSTP is supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health.
