Satcher Community Health Improvement Awards set for March 21

Mar. 10, 2011
Center for Community Health hosts event, grand rounds by community health expert Cynthia Barnes-Boyd

The second annual Dr. David Satcher Community Health Improvement Awards will be presented by URMC’s Center for Community Health at 5:45 p.m. Monday, March 21, in the Class of ’62 Auditorium at the Medical Center. The awards are named in honor of the 16th Surgeon General of the United States, who completed his residency at URMC in the 1970s. Satcher has gone on to become a leading voice in the field of public health and has dedicated his career to improving public health policy.
The evening features a special grand rounds lecture delivered by Cynthia (Cee) Barnes-Boyd, R.N., M.S.N., Ph.D., F.A.A.N., one of the most innovative thinkers in the field of community health. Barnes-Boyd is a clinical associate professor at the University of Illinois School of Public Health and College of Nursing; she also serves as director for the Great Cities and Neighborhoods Initiative and Healthy City Collaborative. Her talk, titled “Keeping it Real: Creating and Sustaining Authentic University/Community Partnerships,” will relay her unique perspectives on maintaining vibrant university/community interventions to address health needs, disparities and barriers.

In their second year, these community health improvement awards distinguish individuals who have made significant contributions to community health in the greater Rochester region through research, education, clinical services and outreach efforts. At the same time, the awards reflect URMC’s mission to continue to develop and expand university-community partnerships that support participatory research and interventions that reduce health disparities and improve the community’s health.
Parking for guests without URMC parking permits is available in the Kornberg Medical Research Building lot. For more information, call (585-224-3053) or e-mail Mary Anne Gombatto at maryann_gombatto@urmc.rochester.edu.
