Sept. 8 Junior Builders’ Golf Tournament Benefits Mary Parkes Asthma Center

Aug. 8, 2016

The Rochester Junior Builders’ Exchange hosts its 21st annual golf tournament to benefit UR Medicine’s Mary Parkes Center for Asthma, Allergy and Pulmonary Care on Thursday, Sept. 8, at Victor Hills Golf Club.

The scramble begins with a shotgun start at 10:30 a.m., and includes breakfast, lunch and a steak dinner. There will be a variety of silent auction prizes including a trip to Cancun, a diamond pendant necklace, tickets to Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres games as well as fine giftware from MacKenzie-Childs.

“The Mary Parkes Center for Asthma, Allergy and Pulmonary Care is a tremendous resource for the community and region and we are proud to support the team and patients,” said Mark Mancuso, chair of the Junior Builders’ Exchange (JBX) board of directors. Last year the tournament raised $200,000.

The center is named for a young woman who died during a severe asthma episode. Walter and Carmina Parkes and their children Susan, Tom and Linda, were driven to open the first asthma center in the region.  The center provides outstanding patient care using cutting-edge technology, and contributes to advancing care as clinicians and scientists partner to conduct novel research toward new therapies.

The Junior Builders’ Exchange chose to support the center after learning about her story and the commitment of the family that helped create the center. Working closely with the Parkes family, the JBX has seen the tournament grow from raising $4,000 in its first year to about $200,000 last year.

“This is clearly one of the largest tournaments in the area.  We sell out two golf courses quickly and are always happy to see such support and commitment from the builders in our area,” Mancuso said.
