Storybook Signing to Benefit Friends of Strong Pet Therapy Program
Friends of Strong and a few of its canine companions from Strong PETS (Pets Engaged in Therapeutic Socialization) will host a book signing for co-authors Ann Lacey and Mike Fess for their illustrated storybook “Just What the Dog-tor Ordered,” from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, at the Strong Memorial Hospital Gift Shop.
Lacey, founder and program supervisor of Strong PETS, and Fess, a local artist and former patient at the Golisano Children’s Hospital, released their book on Aug. 15 to raise money for the Friends of Strong Pet Therapy Program.
A former teacher and therapist, Lacey founded Strong PETS in 2000 with her Shetland sheepdog Rickey, and has since welcomed over 20 dogs into the program. Each provides a sense of comfort and cheer to adult and pediatric patients alike. Described by Lacey as “A Tail of Furry Physicians,” the book illustrates the dogs’ daily interactions with patients and families at Strong Hospital.
Fess has created art for Golisano Children’s Hospital, the Seneca Park Zoo, and St. John Fisher College. His work can be seen at the website Drawn to Give (www.drawntogive.com) where he provides illustrated greetings for non-profit organizations.
The gift shop is located off the hospital lobby. Books will be available for $10, and all proceeds benefit Friends of Strong Pet Therapy Program. Cash or checks (made payable to Friends of Strong) will be accepted.
