The Power of Patient Stories: Learning Moments in Medicine

Throughout the course of his 60-year career, Paul F. Griner, M.D. has learned a lot from his patients and their families. In his latest book, The Power of Patient Stories: Learning Moments in Medicine, Griner shares 50 patient stories that entertain as well as educate.

The emeritus professor of medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry is a 1959 graduate of the medical school. He is returning to his alma mater on Monday, April 22 from 4 to 5 p.m. to participate in a book reading and signing at the Edward G. Miner Library. The event is free and open to the public.

The Power of Patient Stories is a collection of poignant, and often humorous, bedside stories that hold the attention of the general reader but also present valuable lessons for medical students, professionals, and patients. Questions at the end of each tale encourage readers to think critically, weigh health and ethical considerations, and better understand the challenges physicians face every day.

Dr. Griner has published more than 130 articles, book chapters and books. He held the Samuel E. Durand Chair of Medicine at URMC, served as general director and CEO of Strong Memorial Hospital from 1984 to 1995, is past president of three national medical organizations including the American College of Physicians, and was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 1986.
