Thomas Pearson Elected to Hopkins Society of Scholars
Thomas A. Pearson, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D., the Albert D. Kaiser Professor, Department of Community and Preventive Medicine, and senior associate dean for clinical research at the University of Rochester Medical Center, has been elected to the distinguished Society of Scholars of Johns Hopkins University.
Pearson was inducted into the Society at a special ceremony on May 20, and was recognized at commencement at Johns Hopkins. He is among 15 other honorees from around the world.
The Society of Scholars inducts former postdoctoral fellows, postdoctoral degree recipients, house staff as well as junior or visiting faculty who have served at least one year at Johns Hopkins and thereafter gained marked distinction elsewhere in their fields. Pearson earned his bachelor’s degree, medical degree, masters in public health and doctorate in epidemiology at Hopkins. He also completed residency and fellowship training at Hopkins.
He was selected for his international leadership in public health research and cardiovascular disease prevention. Pearson is a founding member of the World Heart Forum for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and has been a major contributor to the American Heart Association’s prevention guidelines. He has a special interest in observing heart disease trends and the extent to which guidelines are carried out, and has lectured and published extensively on these topics.
Most recently, Pearson was among the experts chosen to serve on the 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, which will report to the U.S. Secretaries of Agriculture and Health and Human Services. The Committee will steer changes to the current Dietary Guidelines, viewed as the cornerstone of American food policy. In addition, Pearson has a strong interest in clinical research training and developing medical school curriculum in preventive cardiology.
The Society of Scholars was created in 1967. This year’s inductees bring the total number of Scholars to 536.
