UR Pediatrician, AAP Publish Textbook of Pediatric Care

The Textbook of Pediatric Care is an essential tool for practicing pediatricians and soon-to-be physicians, and its new design and online components make it even easier to use for diagnosis and accessing updated guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

The textbook, whose editor-in-chief Tom McInerny, M.D., F.A.A.P., is the Associate Chair for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center, is in its fifth edition. This is the first edition published with the AAP. Previous editions were published under the name Primary Pediatric Care and were edited by the legendary Robert Hoekelman, M.D., a former Chair of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester.

The new edition takes a huge leap ahead in terms of technological advances, providing pediatricians with the entire text in a searchable electronic form. It also links the electronic version to AAP updates and new guidelines, so the online text stays current. McInerny said that addition along with a redesigned diagnostic section make the text very practical for pediatricians.

“Children don’t come into the office with a diagnosis written on their forehead,” McInerny said. “The Presenting Signs and Symptoms section allows pediatricians to explore potential diagnoses by the symptoms, such as fatigue and weakness, rather than by the diagnosis.”

McInerny has more than 35 years experience as a primary care pediatrician and is the chair of the Town-Gown Committee which manages the relationship between the University and the community pediatricians, who all hold faculty appointments. He is the immediate past chair of the AAP Committee on Child Health Financing and is also a member of the following AAP committees: Task Force on Immunization, the Mental Health Task Force, and Steering Committee on Quality Improvement and Management. He also served as President of the AAP Chapter I, District II (Upstate NY) and Treasurer of the AAP District II. He has also been chair of the AAP Annual Chapter Forum and Pediatric Research in the Out-patient Setting Steering Committees and served on the AAP Private Payer Advocacy Advisory Committee and the AAP Access to Care Subcommittee.
