University of Rochester Medical Center cardiologists will offer free blood pressure and oxygenation screenings to help detect early signs of heart disease, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 12, at Marketplace Mall. This is part of the Medical Center’s community outreach efforts to mark American Heart Month.

Doctors and nurses from the URMC Heart and Vascular Center will demonstrate how the body’s blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen levels change and impact the body using “Sim Man,” a computerized mannequin. Participants will receive tips for improving their heart health

Each year, cardiovascular disease tops the list of the country's most serious health problems. People can reduce their risk by choosing a healthy diet, exercising, avoiding tobacco use and completing routine health check-ups.

According to the American Heart Association, about one third of all Americans have some form of heart disease, including high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, heart failure, stroke and other conditions. By 2030, experts estimate that about 116 million people in the United States will have some form of cardiovascular disease.

URMC has a long history of providing comprehensive expertise in all specialties of clinical cardiovascular medicine, with regional dominance in electrophysiology, heart failure, heart transplantation, vascular medicine, ventricular assist devices, aortic surgery and pediatric heart surgery. The URMC Heart and Vascular Center has nationally recognized research programs in vascular medicine, atrial fibrillation, ablation, hereditary arrhythmias and use of artificial hearts.
