URMC Researcher Receives National Library of Medicine Grant Supplement
Scott McIntosh, PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Community & Preventive Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center, is among seven NIH researchers who have been awarded Informationist supplement grants by the National Library of Medicine (NLM). The supplement provides up to $50,000 in direct costs (plus indirect costs) for two years to an active, NIH-funded researcher, in order to bring needed information expertise into the research team.
The supplemental grant awards will allow for the infusion of librarian informationists into research settings and measure the value of their contributions to the research initiative. Fourteen librarian informationists will be involved across the seven projects that received funding.
McIntosh’s parent grant from the National Cancer Institute, “Web-assisted Tobacco Intervention with Community College Students”, involves testing a web-based intervention for smoking cessation to be used with community college students. Informationists Donna Berryman and Linda Hasman, from URMC’s EG Miner Library will be join the study team as a result of this supplemental funding. The study includes an information gathering phase involving focus groups and interviews, and also a clinical trial to test an intervention.
The informationists will help design the data management approach for the randomized trial and for the data gathered from qualitative interviews and focus groups. They will also help design a system for collecting, storing and accessing both audio and textual data, for tracking data versions, and a metadata approach for the project.
