URMC Skin Cancer Expert to Give Free Talk

Elaine S, Gilmore, M.D., Ph.D., of University Dermatology Associates and the department of Dermatology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, will give a free talk titled “Skin Cancer Prevention and Treatment” from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 24 at the Hahnemann Club, 301 Stoutenburgh Lane, located on the campus of The Highlands at Pittsford, off of Rt. 31, just east of the village of Pittsford.

In the United States, one in two cancers is skin-related (1.1 million annually). Astonishingly, the incidence of melanoma, one of the most fatal skin cancers, has doubled in the past 30 years. Factors associated with the increase in skin cancer will be discussed, as well as measures individuals can take to improve detection and treatment.

“Skin Cancer Prevention and Treatment” is the opening lecture in the popular 10-part health and wellness series, “To Your Health!,” presented by The Highlands at Pittsford and the University of Rochester Medical Center, to inspire and educate older adults about health issues specific to their needs. The programs are taught by URMC’s faculty of distinguished physicians and other providers affiliated with the Medical Center, including Strong Memorial Hospital, the Eastman Dental Center, Visiting Nurse Service and other affiliates of the Medical Center.

**The first 10 people to register for “Skin Cancer Prevention and Treatment” will be offered a free skin cancer screening. The screening will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. at The Highlands.
