URMC to Study Heart Health in Children
Pediatric Volunteers Needed to Examine Effect of Growth and Tobacco Exposure

The University of Rochester Medical Center’s Golisano Children’s Hospital is conducting a study to determine how changes in growth and tobacco exposure affect cardiovascular risk factors, such as cholesterol, blood pressure and glucose (blood sugar), among children in their pre-teen years. The aim of the Study Tracking the Regulation of Nutrition and Growth in Kids (STRONG Kids) is to examine this issue early in life when diet, exercise and smoking habits are being developed and when the earliest evidence of risk factors can be seen.
Study coordinators are looking for parents who are willing to allow their 9- or 10-year-olds to participate in the three-year study. The study requires four two-hour visits to the Clinical Research Center at the Medical Center which include:
· Questionnaires to be completed at each visit
· Measurement of height, weight, waist circumference and blood pressure
· Blood draw
The study plans to enroll more than 200 children.
Children who participate will receive t-shirts and hats with the STRONG Kids study logo. Children and their parents will also receive up to $150 in cash or gift cards, depending on the number of visits completed. They will also receive results of the study when it is completed.
