Wilmot Cancer Center Physician Receives National Honor

Louis “Sandy” Constine, M.D., FASTRO , vice chair of Radiation Oncology for URMC’s James P. Wilmot Cancer Center, has received a National Institutes of Health Merit Award for his work with the PDQ Pediatric Treatment Editorial Board of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). He received his award at the NCI annual awards meeting, held earlier this month in Washington, D.C.

A specialist in the treatment of lymphomas, Constine was honored for his dedicated and exceptional service to the National Cancer Institute in developing and maintaining evidence-based PDQ cancer information summaries for health professionals and the public. The Pediatric Treatment Editorial Board reviews published research findings on a monthly basis and meets seven times a year to review and update information summaries on the treatment of childhood cancers.

Constine is a professor of Radiation Oncology and Pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) and an international expert in the late effects of radiation therapy treatment. He serves on several groups working to develop guidelines for the screening of chronic side effects of cancer therapy and travels throughout the U.S. and internationally to share his expertise. He works with Lois Travis, M.D., Sc.D., at URMC’s Rubin Center for Cancer Survivorship, dedicated to studying and minimizing the long-term effects of cancer care.
