Wilmot Cancer Institute welcomes two physicians

Hezel, M.D., Interim Chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the University of Rochester. “Both doctors exemplify the very best of the University of Rochester Medical Center and Wilmot Cancer Institute. Each offers top-notch specialty cancer care in their respective areas – lymphoma and gastro-intestinal cancer. They are dedicated to the research mission, and their approach to patients is marked by compassion and humility.”

 

Dunne graduated from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn in 2009 and then came to the University of Rochester Medical Center, where he completed his residency, chief residency and a two-year fellowship.

 

Dunne plans to conduct research in pancreatic and biliary cancers, looking specifically at weight and muscle loss, issues that affect more than 70 percent of GI cancer patients.

“Pancreatic cancer is one of the biggest challenges that we face as oncologists,” Dunne said. “Treatments need to be improved. It’s a cancer we’re finding affects friends, family members and there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done.”

 

Reagan graduated from SUNY Upstate Medical University in 2009 and completed his residency and chief residency at the University of Virginia. He also completed a two-year fellowship at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

 

One major part of Reagan’s new role will be opening a clinical trial for older patients who have diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

“It’s a really exciting time in cancer care and in lymphoma particularly,” Reagan said. “Things are changing rapidly so it’s an exciting time to be just starting out. Therapies are becoming more targeted and more tolerable for patients.”
