Wilmot Warrior Walk Registration Opens

Registration is officially open for the 2017 Wilmot Warrior Walk, taking place Sunday, Sept. 10, at the Highland Park Bowl at the corner of South Avenue and Robinson Street in Rochester. In its fifth year, the event features a certified 5K, 10K and 1-mile walk.

The event’s purpose is to bring together those impacted by cancer to raise funds for cancer research at UR Medicine’s Wilmot Cancer Institute as well as Wilmot’s Judy DiMarzo Cancer Survivorship Program. Last year, approximately 1,000 participants raised more than $100,000. This year, the goal is to double that.

"Cancer impacts all of us in some way, but sometimes we are powerless against it. The great thing about the Wilmot Warrior Walk is that it’s something you can do to take action against cancer,” says Tiffany Paine-Cirrincione, associate director, Advancement and Community Events at Wilmot. “By creating a team and raising funds, you’re having a hand in helping strengthen local cancer research efforts and ensuring cancer survivors in our region have access to the post-treatment care they need.”

In addition to the walk or run, the Warrior Walk includes a post-race celebration complete with food trucks, live music, activities for the kids and more. This year, parking closer to the event and more shuttle buses will be available. While race courses remain mostly the same as last year, a few tweaks have been made to improve the 5K route. Courses run along the Genesee River, through the University of Rochester campus and, for the 10K, through part of downtown Rochester.

Organizers plan to recognize all cancer survivors who attend and participate, but teams are encouraged to support people they know who have been impacted by cancer.

"Whether the patient has just been diagnosed or finished treatment years ago, it’s so inspiring to see attendees rally around a friend or family member at the Warrior Walk,” says Paine-Cirrincione. “We encourage all who have been touched by cancer to form a team. Together, we can make a difference and celebrate life.”

A number of other events happening during the summer support the Wilmot Warrior Walk, including Survivors Night at Frontier field taking place Aug. 11 and Batavia Survivors Night at Dwyer Stadium July 28.
