Young Adult Cancer Survivors to Meet July 9 at Wilmot Cancer Center

Jun. 21, 2009
Two-time cancer survivor Georgianna Zicari and her husband, John, visited Italy on their honeymoon.

Young adult cancer survivors – ages 18-39 – and their families and friends can network with others and learn about specialized topics with community and medical professionals during a new monthly lecture series at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center.  The Young Adult Survivor Connection meets from 4:30 to 6 p.m., Thursday, July 9.

Georgianna Zicari, a two-time cancer survivor, helped establish the group with support from Leah Shearer, who started I’m Too Young for This networking group. The new support group is open to all cancer survivors and their families and friends.

“When young people are diagnosed with cancer, it’s a shock because the majority of people with cancer are older.  This group is a way for people in their 20s and 30s who are dealing with cancer now, or are survivors, to connect and learn from each other,” Zicari said.  She is a member of the Wilmot Cancer Center’s Patient and Family Advisory Council and was honored with the Nathanial Rutter Inspirational Patient Award in 2007.

Wilmot Cancer Center dietitian Joanna Lipp, M.S., R.D., C.N.S.D., C.D.E., will lead a discussion of nutrition after cancer during the July 9 meeting. Upcoming topics include exercise, late effects of cancer treatment, navigating disability paperwork, fertility, massage and alternative therapies.

The group will be facilitated by Rita Goodman, L.M.S.W., and Jennifer Masseth, P.A.  For more information, call Goodman at (585) 275-4631.
