Pediatric Rheumatology Fellowship Curriculum

First Year

The first year of the Pediatric Rheumatology Fellowship is heavily clinical. Fellows train in both inpatient and outpatient settings while beginning to explore their scholarly opportunities.

Clinical

Starting in the first year, fellows have their own continuity clinic throughout fellowship to understand the progression of disease. Inpatient service time is at Golisano Children’s Hospital.

  • One half-day continuity clinic
  • Three weekly faculty clinics
  • 32 weeks of Pediatric inpatient service
  • Four weeks of Adult inpatient service
  • Four weeks of elective rotations

Starting in the first year, fellows observe and perform under supervision the following procedures:

  • Joint injections
  • Arthrocentesis
  • Tendon and bursal injections

Fellows are also exposed to musculoskeletal ultrasound and learn how to read and interpret results by working alongside Dr. Beth Marston, a musculoskeletal ultrasound expert.

Research

With guidance from the program director, the fellow is assigned a mentor and begin to form their scholarship oversight committee. Fellows explore their specific areas of interest and select their Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC). They initiate their scholarly activity project and research design with the assistance of their research mentor with whom they meet with on a regular basis. 

Second and Third Years

Clinical

Inpatient responsibilities decrease in the second and third years of training to allow for protected research time.

  • One half-day continuity clinic
  • Three weekly faculty clinics
  • Four weeks of Pediatric inpatient service
  • Four weeks of Adult inpatient service
  • Elective rotations

Research

The second and third years of the Pediatric Rheumatology Fellowship is heavily research focused. Fellows have ten months devoted to research training in each of the last two years of fellowship. With the guidance of their scholarship oversight committee, each fellow completes a research project and prepares a manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. Most fellows present their research at a national meeting.
