Inpatient Consultation Service

During this time the fellow, under the direct supervision of one of the pediatric pulmonology faculty, will have responsibility for those patients admitted to the pediatric pulmonology service, and will perform consults as requested on patients from the pediatric wards, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Emergency Department and Adult CF.

Each fellow will have experience with a wide variety of acute and chronic pulmonary diseases including:

  • Cystic fibrosis (Pediatric and Adult)
  • Asthma, acute bacterial
  • Viral respiratory tract infections
  • Bronchopulmonary dysplasia
  • Viral pneumonia, congenital
  • Acquired airway
  • Anatomic abnormalities
  • Upper airway obstructive disease
  • Respiratory failure
  • Chronic cough
  • Pulmonary edema
  • Unexplained apnea
  • Cyanosis
  • Other disorders of respiratory control

Expertise can be obtained in many procedures including flexible bronchoscopy, non invasive positive pressure ventilation, mechanical ventilation, chest physical therapy, thoracentesis, physical therapy, and post operative respiratory management. The fellow will have extensive involvement in the PICU with patients in respiratory failure and with chronic mechanical ventilation, and is encouraged to serve as a PICU fellow for 4 weeks.
