Cardiovascular Science program wins HHMI award

November 17, 2009

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) has awarded the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry $700,000 to support a new program to train graduate students for a biomedical research career in cardiovascular sciences with an emphasis on translating laboratory discoveries into treatments and diagnostics. Julianne Feola

Julianne, a student in Dr. Gail Johnson-Voll's lab, was awarded a pre-doctoral fellowship from the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Neurological Disordered and Stroke. The award is for her project entitled: "The Role of Astrocytic Transglutaminase 2 in Mediating Ischemic Stroke Damage".

Revathi recently received the NYSTEM pre-doctoral grant for the project titled "Potentiation of stem cell like characteristics of adult Müller glial cells in vivo to promote retinal ganglion cell regeneration". Congratulations!

Danielle deCampo
MSTP Graduate Student, Department of Neurobiology & Anatomy

Congratulations to Danielle for receiving NIMH Fellowship support for her project, An Extended Amygdala Path with Implications for Early Life Stress. Using a variety of techniques, Danielle is examining a pathway through the amygdala that appears to play a role in the development of stress responses and is affected by early life stress. Her project is an outgrowth of collaborations with Dr. Judy Cameron (University of Pittsburgh) and Dr. Karoly Mirnics (Vanderbilt University), and previous support of the URMC CTSI Pilot Program.
