Orientation Information

August 10-14, 2015

Orientation will begin on Monday, August 10, 2015 with a continental breakfast at 8:00 a.m. in the Flaum Atrium (area G-9500 of the School of Medicine & Dentistry). Please note: Unless otherwise noted, most days have scheduled activities from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Attendance is mandatory at all orientation sessions, even if you participate in "Pre-Registration". There is time designated during the week to complete a number of compliance requirements

Verification of Eligibility

  • Please refer to the list below, and make sure the appropriate original documents are in your possession when you arrive for pre-registration or registration on the first day of orientation. You will note that in some instances, certain documents will satisfy more than one requirement. 

    • Item One: Documentation that Establish Identity 

    Please Bring:
    State-issued driver's license (or State I.D. Card) with a photograph, or information that includes name, sex, height, weight, color of eyes and date of birth 
    Or        U.S. Military Card
    Or        United States Passport 
    Or        Certificate of U.S. Citizenship
    Or        Certificate of Naturalization
    Or        Original (Not photocopy) Alien Registration Card issued by U.S. Immigration to verify Permanent Residency 

    • Item 2: Documentation that Establish Citizenship 

    Please Bring: 
    U.S. Military Card
    Or        United States Passport 
    Or        Certificate of U.S. Citizenship
    Or        Certificate of Naturalization
    Or        Birth Certificate issued by a state, county, or municipal authority, bearing a seal or similar certification.

CPR Certification

  • The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry requires that all medical students be certified in Basic Life Support. Certification or re-certification will not be part of a medical school course, but will be a stand-alone session to be scheduled at the student's convenience. The URSMD requires a CPR BLS Certification Card. On line BLS certification will not be accepted.

    Each entering student is required to provide the Registrar's Office with a copy of his/her certification card by December 30, of his or her first year of medical school. Documentation of current certification will exempt students from needing to do an original or refresher course during their first semester. Their certification and expiration dates will be noted in their permanent records. For most students, a re-certification will be required at the end of second year or during the summer of the third year. A copy of the re-certification card must be submitted to the Registrar's Office for placement in the permanent record.

    Certification can be obtained through the Medical School's Center for Experiential Learning or any certified agency.  The Center for Experiential Learning offers American Heart Association certification (original and refresher) throughout the year to medical students.  This certification is valid for two years.

    Although students have until December 30, to complete the certification process, they are encouraged to complete the requirement as soon as possible.  For additional information consult the following Center for Experiential Learning website.

Robert L. & Lillian H. Brent White Coat Ceremony / Reception

  • There will be a White Coat Ceremony on Friday, August 14th @ 9:30 a.m. at the Interfaith Chapel on the University of Rochester River Campus.

    Parking is not available on River Campus.  Students should park in their designated Medical Center lot and walk to the Chapel.  Guests should park in Medical Center Visitor Lots and walk to the Chapel.

    After the White Coat Ceremony, there will be a special luncheon. 

    The lunch reception will take place in the Flaum Atrium on Friday, August 14, 2015 at 12:00 noon.

    While there is not a fee for the members of the class of 2019, there is a $25.00 fee for each guest attending the lunch.  To facilitate the School's ability to plan, advance reservations are required for all lunch guests.  Incoming students should fill out the reply form located on the Orientation website to indicate the number of guests they will have attending the lunch. 

    Following the luncheon, family and friends are invited to an information session designed to introduce them to the Double Helix Curriculum and the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.
